What we’re drinking this week: Woolies canned wine

From martinis to rosé, alcohol in tins is a big trend – so we are very taken with Woolies’ new range of canned wines.
October 25, 2024

Pop into a boutique booze shop or big retailer in London or New York and you’ll see rows and rows of canned drinks. There are niche, high-end negronis, premixed salty margaritas and little tins of fancy bubbly. Now Woolies has entered the chat …

Our pick for this week:

Wine in a can

R117.99-R159.99 for a pack of four, Woolworths

Why we love it:

The cat’s out of the bag – or should we say the can? Having previously collaborated with some of its favourite South African wineries to bring South Africans the “posh papsak” (premium wines in 2l boxes), Woolies has introduced a 250ml can format. Six first-rate local wineries – Diemersdal, Beyerskloof, Haute Cabrière, Kleine Zalze, Ken Forrester and De Wetshof – have partnered with the retailer to launch a brand-new, conveniently canned wine. It’s just in time for picnic season … or camping, or Kirstenbosch summer concerts, or even for the perfect single serving (if you don’t want to open a whole bottle but fancy a tipple). Why? Because they can! The range comes in packs of four.
