What we’re drinking this week: Paul Clüver Riesling

A bright, crisp riesling with zesty citrus and a mineral edge – perfect for any day, especially during riesling week.
March 14, 2025

Riesling may be Germany’s beloved varietal, with a heartland in the Rhine and Moselle valleys, but South Africa produces some standout versions too – albeit on a small scale. While it’s not as popular as dry whites like sauvignon blanc and chenin, we think it deserves some love.

Our pick this week:

Paul Clüver Riesling

R139.99, Woolworths

Why we love it:

A niche gem in South Africa, Paul Clüver’s riesling is all elegance – zesty lime, citrus blossom and a mineral backbone from shale-rich soils. It’s bright, textured and beautifully balanced between natural sweetness and acidity. Crisp and clean, but generally restrained, with the signature “nervousness” of a classic riesling.

It’s perfect for a week in which riesling is celebrated – yesterday was International Riesling Day – or any time, really.
