Stay:
Then, jumping on the Bulgari train with fervour, you could book yourself into the iconic Italian jewellery brand’s latest hotel for about R35,000 a night. Sure, that’s not a cheap stay, but, boy, is this new Italian accommodation gorgeous.
The real kicker about this particular Bulgari establishment is that it’s in the luxury brand’s hometown, Rome. The “it” spot opened just over a year ago and is situated minutes from the Spanish Steps and the Bulgari boutique. Like one of Bulgari’s diamond-encrusted Serpenti necklaces, it is the epitome of Italian glamour and turning out to be just as lauded.

It was recently the subject of its own doccie, An Emperor’s Jewel – The Making of the Bulgari Hotel Roma, and the highly-rated global network of luxury travel agents, Virtuosa Travel, just voted it the best hotel in the world for 2024. Not bad for a building that once served as a 1930s government joint planned by Benito Mussolini.
After extensive planning and redevelopment, today it is a space that drips in gilded moments, marble and mosaics. The jewellery house has been a mainstay of the Eternal City since 1884 and its magic engulfs the hotel’s swanky bedrooms, a spa complete with 20m pool and staggering rooftop terraces with views worthy of a Fellini film.
