Mandla Sibeko is the director of FNB Art Joburg, founder of Seed Capital Investments and a hugely familiar face on the City of Gold’s cultural scene, but where does this purveyor of taste and style eat, and what is he reading?
What’s the best book you’ve read in the past year. And why?
An African History of Africa by Zeinab Badawi. It is a beautiful, powerful account of Africa’s history written through the eyes of an iconic African. It paints a full picture of why Africa has always been in demand by those who colonised it … so much began here.
How do you keep fit?
I keep a strict gym routine three times a week.
Weekday, lowkey restaurant go-to? What do you order?
For coffee, Father Coffee; for a meal, always whatever is being dished up from the harvest table at Service Station Café in Melville.
What is the one artwork you’ll always love, and why?
I absolutely love Thenjiwe Niki Nkosi’s work.
What do you regret most?
I try not to regret anything. I always ultimately achieve what I have set my mind to over time. If it does not work out, I accept that it was not meant to be.
The one unusual item you can’t live without?
Sadly, it’s my phone …
Who was your high school celeb crush?
Naomi Campbell. She has always been a hit.
Three songs that you’d take to a desert island?
Burn Out by Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse (it’s a classic staple); Miriam Makeba’s Aluta Continua; and Jian Wang for classical music.
